Montauk Lighthouse

Novel Billy Summers Stephen King (2022)
Billy Summers' final confrontation takes place in a plush Montauk mansion not far from the lighthouse. A monument that Stephen King mentions in his novel without forgetting to specify that it is also a museum where the history of the region is told with a certain fervor.

“We passed the Lighthouse Museum. Less than a hundred meters further on, we turned left. Night had fallen. Somewhere on the right, we could hear the ocean. A crescent moon filtered through the branches of the trees.”

Stephen King

The Montauk lighthouse is only passing through in Billy Summers, Stephen King’s novel, but its role is to anchor the story in a real setting. Indeed, if the first part of the story takes place in Red Bluff, a fictional town, the end takes place in Montauk, near the famous lighthouse.

Tribute to Emile Zola

Billy Summers, the main character of the novel, often mentions his admiration for Émile Zola. Thérèse Raquin is mentioned several times. Stephen King also quoting Charles Dickens. Two references about which the novelist explained himself in Esquire magazine: “When we first meet Billy, he’s thinking about Thérèse Raquin, which is one of Émile Zola’s early novels—kind of a scary book. I thought to myself, ‘Well, this guy’s probably read just about everything, but he keeps it to himself.'” For example, he mentions several writers such as Tim O’Brien, Émile Zola and Charles Dickens. I assume from that, the reader will say, “He’s probably really well-read. He’s read Hemingway and he’s read Faulkner, because he talks about As I Lay Dying.” He’s a well-read guy, but he just keeps it under the rose, so to speak.

Pre-pandemic thriller

Billy Summers is also one of the first fiction novels to address the Covid-19 pandemic. Written before and during the health crisis, it tells a story set in 2019 but repeatedly refers to the fact that the world, unknowingly, is about to go under. A detail that helps anchor Billy Summers in a tangible context.

Billy Summers remained at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for three weeks.

Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum

Built in 1797, automated since 1987, this magnificent lighthouse is the emblematic monument of the city of Montauk.

The first maritime lighthouse built in New York State, the Montauk Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. Subject to a preservation policy, due to the erosion of the rock which could endanger it, the monument culminates at 34 meters high. It served as part of the East Coast Defense Shield during World War II. It now houses a museum.
