“Homework, jobs at home and on top of that, we have to defend our village from Velrans attacks.”

Lebrac (Vincent Bres)

It is market day in the village of Longevernes. Lebrac (Vincent Bres) helps his mother (Mathilde Seigner) sell her vegetables. The leader of the Longevernes clan is always ready to defend his comrades against those of the Velrans village in his war of the buttons.

Behind the camera, Yann Samuell gives his instructions for shooting this market sequence. This unique scene on the lime tree square in Lesterps warranted a dozen takes to finally get it right. In addition, child actors and extras from the region of this Charente village are visible in this very short moment of the feature film with Éric Elmosnino, Fred Testot and Alain Chabat.

In 2012 and while Louis Pergaud’s novel, The War of the Buttons, falls into the public domain. Two film versions were released a week apart. With that of Yann Samuell, Christophe Barratier proposes The New War of the Buttons with Guillaume Canet, Kad Merad and Gérard Jugnot.

The War of the Buttons receives only one award: the Gérard d’or for the worst film of 2012, ex aequo with the version of Christoph Barratier.
