Mall
Sometimes, abandoned buildings and facilities are a director’s delight. Just as the showrunners of Stranger Things transformed Gwineth Place Mall in Duluth into Starcourt Mall for Season 3, Calgary’s Northland Village Mall hosted almost the entire filming of Episode 7 of Season 1 of The Last of Us.
Apocalyptic shopping
Episode 7 of the first season of The Last of Us sees Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her friend Riley (Storm Reid) visit an old mall, where Ellie plays video games for the first time. To recreate this devastated and deserted place, the producers of the series were able to take advantage of the Northland Village Mall, a disused shopping center in Calgary. A godsend for The Last of Us as this place was perfectly adapted to the specifications of the episode. An opportunity that allowed HBO to save a considerable amount of money, which would otherwise have been spent on the construction of studio sets.
A showcase for brands
The Last of Us Episode 7’s shopping mall sees the characters evolve in the middle of numerous abandoned stores, many of which belong to real-life franchises. A boon for the brands mentioned!
The composer Gustavo Santaolalla has signed both the music of the video game and the TV series.
Northland Village
Slated for demolition in 2023, this former Calgary mall was once a must-see for all shopping enthusiasts.
More than 80 businesses were gathered in the Northland Village Mall, straddling the Brentwood and Dalhousie neighborhoods in Calgary. Covering an area of 47,000 m2, it was inaugurated in 1971 and closed in 2021.
