Mahal Island Resort

For his third film as a director, Jason Moore used the ANI resort in the Dominican Republic, even though the plot of his film is supposed to take place on an island in the Philippines, in the fictional Mahal Island Resort. The owners gave the whole team a free hand. The latter took place in one of the two villas of the establishment and focused in particular on the infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
A dream site for a nightmare wedding
Telling the story of how wedding guests are taken hostage by a band of pirates, Shotgun Wedding sees most of the cast take to the beautiful pool while the bride and groom, played by Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel, do their best to save everyone. If many scenes are shot on location, within the ANI complex, the interior sequences take place at Pinewood Studios in Juan Dolio. This mythical studio is particularly renowned for its innovative infrastructures that allow the production of very ambitious aquatic sequences. Where films such as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and the action comedy The Lost City with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have already been shot.
Away from the greyness
Shotgun Wedding was filmed at the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, before shooting was almost completely halted, and gave Jason Moore the opportunity to work in the idyllic setting of the Dominican Republic. A shooting of which he keeps an excellent memory, as he confided to the microphone of Broadway World: “The shoot was really fun. It was at over the winter, so I was leaving cold New York City to go to this beautiful Dominican Republic with all these fabulous actors. Most of the movie takes place during the day. So we would get up at sunrise and finish at sunset and in the Dominican, and they’re near the equator. So the days are kind of short. So we shot 10 hour days so that we could get the most light on camera. You’re working with these fun actors in this beautiful location. There were times where I had to remind myself that we were at work and not on vacation, although, you know, it’s always a good reminder that you’re at work.“
