“They hate me.”

Ezra (Jonah Hill)

The barber’s scene is important in that it directly confronts Jonah Hill’s character with the hostility of his future father-in-law, played by Eddie Murphy. A rather short but important scene that Kenya Barris shot at Magnificent Brothers, an institution in Los Angeles.

A city as a character

Deeply rooted in Los Angeles, the story at the center of You People called for the use of real locations. A way for the director and writer Kenya Barris to pay tribute to his city. A desire also shared by Jonah Hill, the co-writer of the script. A collaboration on which Kenya Barris came back for the Screenrant website: “Collaboration with Jonah came because we are both from LA. I love Mid90s, and I’ve been a fan of Jonah forever. You know what I’m saying? We started talking and texting. We sat down for what should have been a 30-minute talk, it turned into a three-hour talk.

Declaration of love

Kenya Barris continued, “And we were like, “Let’s do a love letter to LA culture and basically more, a love letter to love. Let’s do something like that, and kind of show the differences and similarities between the cultures.”” That was something that was really important to us, and I feel like we wanted to have the conversations that are difficult to have.
