“Why don’t you help me get out of here instead of chattering with that muskrat?”

Madmartigan (Val Kilmer)

Years before Peter Jackson made New Zealand the new Middle-earth in his adaptation of Lord of the RingsRon Howard landed in Milford Sound, on the South Island, to wrap up the sequence of the meeting between Willow (Warwick Davis) and the witch Fin Raziel (Patricia Hayes). A very important scene exploiting the intimidating character of a fjord that has become over the years one of the most visited in the world.

Technical revolution

When he discovers Fin Raziel, Willow is far from suspecting that he is not dealing with a human being but with a rodent. Banished then victim of a curse, the witch indeed counts on the young apprentice-magician to find her original appearance.

The opportunity for Ron Howard and his team to use for the first time on a large scale, within the framework of the production of their blockbuster, the still incipient technique of morphing. Willow being the first film to push so far this novelty consisting in transforming a character with the most fluidity possible. This technique was later perfected by James Cameron in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but also used by Michael Jackson in his famous Black or White video.

A British film star

Willow gave Patricia Hayes a late opportunity to find one of her most iconic roles. Nevertheless, the actress was already famous before turning under the direction of Ron Howard. Known for her roles in films such as The Enforcer, The Battle of sexes, Goodbye, Mr. Chips or The NeverEnding Story, she then turned in A Fish Called Wanda.

Willow is the first film to have pushed the morphing technology so far in the late 1980s.
