Ojing-eo (or Squid game) is a South Korean children’s game. This entertainment was very popular in schoolyards across the country in the 1970s and 1980s.
The opening scene of Squid Game begins with a game of this famous cruel and brutal distraction. It shows a young boy, accompanied by friends, making a round in the yard of Kyodong Elementary School.
The Western spectators discover through the sequence, a particular and rather violent game. Its name refers to the shape of an arena reminiscent of a squid. The objective is to reach the animal’s head for one team, and to defend it for the other. One of the characteristics of Ojing-eo is that all the blows are allowed, thus mixing the innocence of the children with the terrible abuses suffered by the players. An opening scene demonstrates in one shot the very spirit of Squid Game.
The Squid Game arena is divided into 5 zones. We find the exterior, the foot traverse area, the lower and upper body and finally the objective: the squid head.
Kyodong Elementary School in Seoul
Kyodong Elementary School is the oldest school in South Korea.
Kyodong School was opened in 1894, near the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. It is the oldest school in South Korea and was a pioneer in the education of young Koreans, especially women, by introducing their education in 1925.
