Kiva Theatre
Steven Spielberg shot his entire autobiographical film in California. A state where he has recreated many of the places that played an important role in his childhood and development as a filmmaker.
Showcasing California’s heritage
The sequence in which Sam Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) goes to the cinema to see The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is supposed to take place at the Kiva Theatre, a venue in Arizona, but it is in Moorpark that Steven Spielberg’s team has settled. The director wanted to exploit the typical architecture of the High Street Arts Center. A way to also highlight an emblematic institution of this small city located north of Los Angeles.
An actor under pressure
Of all the actors to have played under the direction of Steven Spielberg, the young Gabriel LaBelle is certainly the one who had to deal with the greatest pressure. After all, he’s the only one to have played Steven Spielberg himself. The actor told how the director presented him the project: “After discovering the script, I thought he was going to take me between the eyes to tell me: “this is what it means to be me, to embody me.” That he was going to give me his great ideas about life. He didn’t do any of that. It was more like me nagging him. I wanted to know how much of the script was really inspired by his own life. He simply replied: “everything”. From that point on, I thought I had to get to know him thoroughly. He became my subject, my study subject.“
The Fabelmans marks the first collaboration between Michelle Williams and Steven Spielberg.
High Street Arts Center
Built on the site of a silent cinema, the High Street Arts opened as El Rancho in 1927.
Inaugurated as the only theater capable of showing talkies, the El Rancho has changed its name and role several times over the years. Totally reorganized in 2001, it became the essential cultural center of Moorpark and acquired its current name. Since then, the place has hosted numerous shows and organized several events throughout the year. It is particularly renowned for its cinema room, the decoration of which has remained the same since the 1950s.
