Many places in Dubrovnik have been taken over by the Game of Thrones production. It is in particular the old city that the teams in charge of the location scouting exploit when the time comes to start filming. Pile Gate, a strategic point in the fortifications where a massive drawbridge once stood, hosts several sequences, including the particularly important one of Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) daughter Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) leaving for Dorne.

The remarkably well-preserved old stones exempt the decorators from using too many computer-generated images. In particular, the surroundings are subject to changes while the few contemporary elements are erased. The city of Dubrovnik is very happy to roll out the red carpet for the cast of the show. Very soon after the broadcast of the first episodes, tourists flocked to the city and stepped in Pile Gate, where it is possible to remember some key sequences of the history of the Seven Crowns.
It is also here, near the ramparts, that the scene is shot in which the queen’s soldiers slaughter all the newborn children in the city in the hope of killing King Robert Baratheon’s bastard (Mark Addy).
Game of Thrones has been broadcast in 207 countries.
This small cove marks the entrance to the old town of Dubrovnik. It is distinguished by its charming bridge and its breathtaking view of the fortifications.
This imposing gate was built in 1537. The bridge that it is now possible to take spans the old moat. It is here that a large wooden drawbridge was once built, of which the chains remain today on each side of the door. It also provides access to the Stradun Steps, the city’s main promenade. This is one of the main Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik.
