Rather than filming in Georgia, where the series is set, the producers chose to build the fictional town of Margrave, invented by writer Lee Child, in the Toronto area. A way to benefit from more advantageous financial conditions. A huge open-air plateau is exploited to build the stores and houses of the town. Nevertheless, certain sequences, such as those in the prison, encourage the team to invest in real places.
This is how the Kingston Penitentiary, a former prison converted into a museum, came into being. If the decorators are careful to remove all elements that might indicate that the place no longer serves as a detention center, the cells and the shower room host two of the most important sequences of the first episode of the show. It is here that Reacher (Alan Ritchson) shows for the first time his talents when it comes to standing up to several assailants, with an unheard of brutality combined with a certain coolness. The opportunity also for the actor Alan Ritchson to expose his impressive musculature. A detail less trivial than it seems given the fact that Lee Child had strongly criticized the choice of Tom Cruise to play his hero in the two films of 2012 and 2016. Jack Reacher being in the novels very big and very muscular. A characteristic that is regularly emphasized throughout the story, including when Reacher finds himself behind bars, struggling with individuals who are not inclined to be impressed.
Alan Ritchson is the second actor to play Jack Reacher, after Tom Cruise.
Kingston Penitentiary
Opened on June 1, 1835, Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario, closed its doors on September 30, 2013 before being converted into a museum.
Housing both men and women, known for “housing” criminals such as Grace Marks, Susan Kenney, Wayne Boden and Russell Williams, Kingston Penitentiary also became part of the region’s history following the August 14, 1954 riot, during which prisoners caused $2 million worth of damage, mobilizing 160 officers for two hours.
The building is now part of the Correctional Service of Canada Museum, where its history is told through documents and photographs. It has been featured in several novels including Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood and Cataract City by Craig Davidson.
