Jurassic World Main Street
What better way to create a fictional theme park than in an authentic theme park? Making films sometimes means taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. So director Colin Trevorrow took over the old Six Flags Park facilities in New Orleans. Closed after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Six Flag was abandoned when the production of Jurassic World obtained permission to build Main Street, the main artery of the park.
Artisans do not use existing buildings to build multiple businesses. Instead, they operate the large parking lot. They set up real franchises, such as Nobu and Margaritaville restaurants, an IMAX theater, but also invented stores. In Jurassic World, you can have lunch at Winston’s, a restaurant created to honor the late Stan Winston, the creator of the animatronics in the first Jurassic Park trilogy. Several other films have also been shot at Six Flags, such as William Friedkin’s Killer Joe and Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Jurassic World won three awards: the World Soundtrack Award, an MTV Movie Award for Best Action Performance for Chris Pratt and a Saturn Award for Best Young Actor for Ty Simpkins.
Six Flags Parkway
This Six Flags theme park had to close its doors following the passage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Opened in 2000, the Six Flags park in New Orleans was appreciated by visitors thanks to its sensational attractions such as the Mega Zeph, a wooden roller coaster, the Bayou Blaster or the Sonic Slam. These last two were also transferred to Great Escape, another Queensbury park in New York State in 2009. Following its closure, Six Flags remained closed and in 2014 hosted the filming of some scenes from the Jurassic World movie.
