“They say talent skipsa generation. I’m sure your kids’ll be sharp as tacks.”

Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum)

The Lost World: Jurassic Park takes place four years after the events of the first movie. The production was therefore also held largely on the Hawaiian archipelago, but not only. This introductory scene, in which Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) is convinced by John Hammond to lead an expedition to Isla Nublar, takes place in California, in the billionaire’s house. The objective of the teams in charge of the location scouting is to find a home that fits the character played by Richard Attenborough. They then set their sights on Mayfield Senior School, a private Catholic school for girls in Pasadena. Near Universal Studios, the place is open for filming.Devil in a Blue Dress, Carl Franklin’s thriller with Denzel Washington, has just been produced there.

For the purposes of the sequence, the decorators arrange the place to match the personality of the old man. The woodwork, the rare objects and other rich furniture constitute a credible environment, while the architecture of the building refers to the wealth of its owner.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park takes many liberties with the book of the same name by Michael Crichton. Book of which Ian Malcolm is for example absent, whereas he is the main character in the film. It must be said that the man does not survive his first visit to Jurassic Park in the novel. Note that the book is greatly inspired, by the author’s own admission, by the Lost World, the adventure novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park cost $73 million, $8 million more than Jurassic Park.

Mayfield Senior School

This private Catholic preparatory school is for girls only. It was founded in 1931 and follows the teachings of its creator, Cornelia Connelly.

With approximately 330 students, the Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena also offers 28 college preparatory classes and teaches fine arts, English, mathematics, theology and science. Its main building, built in 1919 and first known as Marshallia Manor, contributed to its popularity as a film location. Movies like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, The Devil in a Blue Dress, Legally Blonde, and The Nutty Professor have exploited it over the years.
