Iron Throne Room
While the production of Game of Thrones was mainly based at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the production of House of the Dragon was based at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. It is here that the decorators have completely rebuilt the Iron Throne Room.
Already visible in Game of Thrones, the Iron Throne is not quite the same in House of the Dragon. In fact, it is the throne room that the craftsmen have redesigned to give it a slightly different and certainly more stripped down look than in Game of Thrones. In House of the Dragon where the famous seat is surrounded by swords whose blades dart towards the ceiling. The floor, the walls and even the massive columns are also not as ornate as in Game of Thrones.
Many other interior sets were built inside the Warner Studios, such as the hall of Harrenhal, the largest castle in Westeros, partially destroyed by Aegon the Conqueror, the inner courtyard of the Red Keep and various rooms. None of the interior sets created for Game of Thrones were used. A way of wiping the slate clean, even if, paradoxically, House of the Dragon relates events prior to those told in Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon is set 170 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden
Today fully invested by Warner, these studios were built on a former aeronautical factory from the Second World War.
Acquired by Rolls-Royce, the site became an automobile production plant after the war. In 1992, after the evocation of several projects, the place was abandoned. It wasn’t until 1995 that GoldenEye became the first film to be shot there. Quickly, the cinematographic projects are linked. In 2000, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone contributed to the popularity of the place. All the following parts will be produced there before the construction of a museum open to fans where many sets of the cult saga are gathered. The studios have since hosted numerous shoots such as those of Tomb Raider or the House of the Dragon series.
