Iron Throne Room
The iconic Iron Throne Room
The Paint Hall Studios facility allowed showrunners D. B. Weiss and David Benioff to commission the construction of numerous sets, including the Iron Throne Room, where the ruler of the Seven Crowns sits. An iconic Game of Thrones location shaped by designer Gemma Jackson’s teams. An artist who first oversaw the construction of the throne itself, made of wood and leather, with multiple paint effects to mimic the texture of metal as the royal chair is made of swords fused together.
Multiple references to pop-culture
The throne having given the opportunity to the production to multiply the very subtle winks to other iconic works of pop culture. The most observant fans have thus spotted over the seasons Gandalf’s sword from Lord of the Rings, that of the main character in the film Kingdom of Heaven or even the very impressive sword of Conan in Conan the Barbarian. A sword that years later found its way into the hands of David Harbour in season 4 of Stranger Things, when he fights the Demogorgon.

An Italian soil as a model
For the Red Keep room, Gemma Jackson was inspired by a rather unexpected place as she explains in an official making-of video of the series: “The fall before the production started, I went to Rome where I visited the Pantheon. I admired this incredible floor which inspired the one in the throne room. I designed the pillars, with these embossed leaf decorations, to give the room a cathedral-like feel (…). I loved designing this incredible place.“
The Iron Throne contains about 200 swords.
Titanic Studios
Part of the Harland and Wolff shipyard, where the Titanic was built, the Paint Hall Studio hosted the filming of many interior scenes from Game of Thrones.
Europe’s largest indoor filming complex, the Paint Hall Studio has been used by HBO to build some of Game of Thrones‘ most iconic sets, including the Iron Throne room and Daenerys’ room in the Great Pyramid of Meereen. . Parts of Winterfell, Castle Black and the Great Sept of Baelor also originated here. The main hangar, 27.5 meters high, offers beautiful perspectives. The same goes for the different zones, shaped to facilitate the construction of imposing sets.
