Shot entirely in Portland and the surrounding area, Metal Lords follows in the footsteps of such features as Wayne’s World, Airheads and Detroit Rock City. Rather than filming in a studio, director Peter Sollett and producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the two showrunners of Game of Thrones, opted for a maximum of real locations. Places like the building at 1021 NE on 33rd Avenue in Portland, where Hunter (Adrian Greensmith) gets admitted after committing one too many roadside accidents.
Author of the script, D.B. Weiss told Screen Rant about Metal Lords: “If Game of Thrones hadn’t worked, I would have immediately dedicated myself to Metal Lords. That didn’t happen and I had time to think about the film during the many years of production of the series. It was also an opportunity to reflect in the script the many changes that the world underwent between the time I had the idea and the beginning of the shooting. I love heavy metal and I love high school movies just as much, although this one is my first.“
On the subject of casting, D.B. Weiss also stated: “I was looking for fresh faces. Jaeden Martell was an obvious choice (…). I had seen Isis Hainsworth in a few shows before, but Adrian Greenfield had never done anything before. It’s always exciting to work with new actors who are also really talented. An actor who has been in fifty different films can encourage viewers to think about this or that feature film. Given their limited experience, Isis and Adrian had an easier time making their characters believable.”
Metal Lords is the first feature film in which Adrian Greensmith plays.
1021 NE 33rd Ave
1021 NE 33rd Avenue in Portland is located in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the area.
Located south of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, this building is located in the northeast corner of downtown Portland, not far from Grant Park and Laurelhurst Park. Laurelhurst is an area of the city known for its old houses and its golden statue of Joan of Arc. The latter serves here as a memorial to the dead of the First World War. The entire Laurelhurst neighborhood was officially listed on the Register of Historic Places in 2019.
