House of the couple
It is clear from the start to director Charlie McDowell that the couple’s home is central to the dynamics of Windfall. It is even a character in its own right and it is the first one we see appear on screen, even before the actors. A limited but fascinating framework for a huis-clos directed and written in the manner of Alfred Hitchcock that Charlie McDowell only glimpsed once the constraints imposed by Covid-19 were imposed, as he explained on the website The Film Stage: “The whole idea for the film was born out of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Two months into the health crisis, Jason Segel, Justin Lader, Andrew Kevin Walker and I got together on Zoom to share our ideas.“. Even though this is not his first feature film, the filmmaker feels like he is back to square one and envisions Windfall as a sort of new first film, with a story contained in one location and a very limited budget.
That’s why the filming is taking place near Los Angeles. The couple’s home is a private property located at 2196 Grand Avenue in Ojai. The filmmaker’s camera having fully explored this luxurious house with white walls, as well as the entire property. The film contains several scenes by the stone pool, on the terrace, in the Zen garden and of course among the orange trees. A decisive place, bathed by the sun, inside which a story unfolds that will change the lives of three very different characters.
A Netflix production, Windfall is therefore a family production, so to speak. A modest film on paper but well and truly ambitious, whose genius consisted in making the most of difficulties to favor the birth of a tangible suspense.
Windfall is the first film of Charlie McDowell in which Lily Collins, his wife in the city, plays.
