The production schedule for The Northman initially calls for most of the filming to take place in Iceland, where the story takes place. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic forces Robert Eggers and his actors to fall back on Northern Ireland where some scenes have also been planned. Scenes like all those taking place in the village of King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke).
Robert Eggers films not only the arrival of the king, but also the manhood ritual of the young Amleth (Oscar Novak), then 11 years old. He also wraps the reunion of the sovereign with Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman) and a large part of the introductory sequences.
The filming at Torr Head, in County Antrim, was particularly memorable for the team. Craig Lathrop, the lead designer, recalled his experience there in the columns of CN Traveller: “There were times at Torr Head [in Northern Ireland] when we were building [the town in the Hrafnsey scenes] and it was windy and cold but the sun would break out. And every once in a while, you’d be looking out over this gorgeous view of the ocean and there’d be dolphins out there. And these little stoats would be running out all over the place because they loved the sets that we’re building.“
After the shooting, the actors received gifts. This is how Björk was given three horses.
Torr Head
Northern Ireland’s rugged peninsula in County Antrim, Torr Head offers some of the most breathtaking views in this part of the world.
