House-Museum of Compay Segundo
1996. Under the impulse of Ry Cooder and Nick Gold, Buena Vista Social Club is born. To compose it, several artists are solicited among which Cubans and West Africans. But the latter were not able to reach the island and Cubans such as Compay Segundo, Barbarito Torres, Eliades Ochoa or Ibrahim Ferrer recorded an album to revive the pre-revolutionary Cuban music.
The craze for Cuban and Latin music in general allows them to acquire another status. This is the case for Compay Segundo, who was particularly well known in Cuba, but who lived on his low income as an artist and his retirement as a cigar maker. The stamp of Buena Vista Social Cluband in particular the song he composed 10 years before, Chan ChanThis 90-year-old man was able to afford a house in Havana, where he lived until his death on July 13, 2003, with his youngest son, Salvador Repilado Labrada, and his family. In 2006, his house became a museum dedicated to his career.
Compay Segundo hoped to live as old as 115 years of his grandmother. By blowing his 95 and last candles, he had asked for an “extension”.
Casa Compay Segundo
The house-museum of Compay Segundo is located in Calle P of the residential district of Miramar in Havana.
Miramar is a residential district of Havana known in particular for its sublime beaches, its Yacht Club, its luxury hotels or its fountain of the Americas located on the fifth avenue. The small house of Compay Segundo is today a museum dedicated to the musician and the Cuban culture.
