Hogwarts Classrooms

Saga Harry Potter
Movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Chris Columbus (2001)
Hogwarts being a prodigious school, its classrooms had to be unusual. Lacock Abbey was able to lend many of its treasures.

“There will be no foolish wand waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don’t expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion making. However, for those select few… who possess the predisposition, I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper… in death.”

Severus Snape (Alan Rickman)

After taking inspiration from many locations around the UK to build Hogwarts, the production team turned their attention to the interiors. If Gloucester Cathedral was able to bring the corridors of the institution to life, Lacock Abbey lent some of its rooms for the classrooms.

Thus, the sacristy of the abbey became the room of Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), where they learn the preparation of potions. While the boiler room serves as a classroom for Professor Quirrell (Ian Hart), a professor of defense against the forces of evil.

Thereafter, the village of Lacock will appear in many other opuses of the saga. But that’s a whole other story. Walking through Lacock Abbey is like walking into the coolest backyard in the world. To your wands!

Lacock Abbey

Founded in 1232, Lacock Abbey, also known as St. Mary of Lacock Abbey, was dissolved in 1539.

After its dissolution, the abbey was bought by a nobleman from the court of Henry VIII, William Sharington. The latter undertook to convert the monastic buildings into a family home.

In spite of his renovations, the owner still kept many structures such as the cloister, the boiler room and the sacristy. With no heirs, the estate reverted to his niece, Olive Talbot, and remained in the family for four centuries.

Matilda Talbot, their descendant, donated it to the National Trust in 1944, which has opened the site to the public since then.
