Hawkins Library (interior)
While the facade of the Hawkins Library as it appears in Stranger Things matches the Butts County Probate Court in Jackson, the interior is the library in East Point’s Historic Civic Block, a collection of historic buildings dating from the 1930s. A place of memory that Matt and Ross Duffer, the two showrunners of Stranger Things have brilliantly exploited to stage some of the most important sequences of the first season of the series.
Appearing as it does when Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) go to research it, the library is much scarier in the Upside-Down, the world of the Demogorgon, a nightmarish creature with a dark agenda.
Although the plot of Stranger Things may seem rather fanciful at first glance, the Duffer brothers were inspired by real-life elements. The show has its roots in the Montauk Project, a conspiracy theory about alleged paranormal experiences at a secret government site near Montauk, New York. According to the rumors, several researches would indeed have been made on psychological warfare, time travel and teleportation. Stranger Things was also titled Montauk in the early stages of development. Michel Gondry’s film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind also refers to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind .
The first three seasons of Stranger Things accumulate 41 references to movies from the 1980s.
East Point's Historic Civic Block
This complex consists of three historic buildings and a commemorative park, namely the town hall, the auditorium and the library.
It was in 1931 that the town hall and the auditorium of East Point were inaugurated. In 1939, it was the turn of the library to open its doors. Victory Park, dedicated to citizens who died in the war, is laid out as it was in the 1930s. Despite the historical importance of the place, it is threatened by lack of maintenance and an inadequate public policy. An application has been filed to incorporate it into the Georgia Trust of Historic Preservation.
