Hawkins College
Sometimes the teams in charge of locating the locations of films and series are lucky. This is how the producers of Stranger Thingswere able to count, from the start, on a school that had just closed to shoot all the sequences that were supposed to take place in the middle school and then in the high school of Hawkins, the fictional town of the show.
Many schools have achieved fame through film, television or music, such as the college where Grease, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time was filmed. Patrick Henry High School had to wait for its closure to become a household name.
When they arrived in Atlanta to begin production of their series Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer were fortunate to be able to set up Hawkins Middle School and Hawkins High School within the walls of a real school. While sometimes only the facades are used, Shawn Levy and the other directors can roam the hallways and film in the classrooms at will. Permanently accessible, the school can also completely transform and remain as it is between seasons, to the delight of fans. The latter can visit Hawkins College and High School. A true monument of pop culture in which, as much to be warned, no entry to the terrifying Upside-Down has not been spotted!
The Demogorgon, the terrifying creature of the Upside-Down, appears 13 times in Season 1 of Stranger Things.
Patrick Henry Adult Education
Located at 109 South Lee Street in Stockbridge, not far from Atlanta, this former high school was taken over by the production of Stranger Things.
Patrick Henry High School opened in 1964. It welcomes 1,800 students and quickly stands out thanks to the performance of its football and wrestling team. Terry Turner, the creator of That’70’s Show and the screenwriter of Wayne’s World, studied there. In 2015, the school board decided to move the school to the former McDonough Elementary School. It changes its name for the occasion to adopt that of Excel Academy. The building was then transformed into a film location and benefited from the boom in the film and television industry in Georgia.
