Haunted forest beyond the wall
Tollymore Forest, a natural setting for the pilot episode
Tollymore Forest is the first natural site in Northern Ireland to be used in the filming of Game of Thrones, which viewers will discover during the broadcast of the pilot episode. Under the snow, the trees are witness to a death hunt between members of the Night’s Watch and white walkers. Everything is yet to be told, but this promising beginning already sets the mood.
Tollymore, a place visited several times in the series
As it is particularly wild and untouched, despite the presence of historic buildings and other buildings once built by men, Tollymore Forest is a great playground for the producers of Game of Thrones. Later, the directors successively in charge of telling the different episodes of the merciless war for the Iron Throne return to Tollymore. It is here that the Stark children find the giant wolves who are to accompany them on their adventures. For this scene, the production used a real deer corpse, found by chance on the scene. An animal whose odor has strongly inconvenienced the actors. It is also at Tollymore that Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) launches the hunt when Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) manages to escape. More globally, Tollymore becomes the great northern forest adjacent to the domain of Winterfell, the stronghold of the Stark family.
Since the series aired, many fans have been organizing get-togethers at the filming locations in the middle of Tollymore Forest. A place forever attached to the Stark family, rich in dark corners and nooks, alternately ominous or luminous, but always fascinating.
Game of Thrones employed 12,986 extras in Northern Ireland alone during its eight seasons.
Tollymore Forest Park
Forests, waterfalls, historic buildings and stone bridges make up this Northern Ireland forest park that looks like something out of a fairy tale.
Tollymore Forest Park acts as the gateway to the Morne Mountains, south of Belfast. It is the first state park in all of Northern Ireland. Created on June 2, 1955, it covers 630 hectares and includes many buildings nestled in greenery, such as the Clanbrassil barn, the Hermitage or the Corne bridge. Home to the richest flora and fauna, it lends itself wonderfully to hiking and other explorations. Tollymore features in the first episode of the fantasy series Game of Thrones. Part of the forest was also logged in the movie Dracula Untold.
