Hard Rock Café

Music Morrison Hotel The Doors (album - 1970)
If the name Hard Rock Café brings to mind the world-famous restaurant chain, this is not a totally false idea. The story of Hard Rock Café begins in Los Angeles, one day in 1969 with the Doors.

“Being drunk is a good disguise. I drink so I can talk to assholes. This includes me.”

Jim Morrison

In March 1969, the Doors are in Miami to give a concert at Dinner Key Auditorium. To say that it went rather badly is a mild understatement. First of all, the venue of the concert is actually a Pan American World Airways hangar without air conditioning and designed for 7,000 people. The concert will attract more than 12,000 people.

Jim Morrison arrives more than an hour late. Totally drunk, the singer can’t manage to string together the lyrics of his own songs. Several lewd behaviors followed such as simulated oral sex, a statement by the singer to show his penis to the crowd and many other incidents. These facts lead Jim Morrison to answer for his acts in front of justice.

Start of Morrison Hotel

It was not until June that the story settled and work resumed. The album The Soft Parade, released in July, went unnoticed because of these antics. It is then time for the group to find new ideas. Another album is in the works and the combo is walking around Los Angeles with their photographer Henri Diltz in search of inspiration. They then stumbled upon the aptly named Morrison Hotel.

Hard Rock Café, here we come

After an unorthodox photo shoot, Jim Morrison wants a drink. A few blocks from the hotel, the combo stumbled upon a wine bar called the Hard Rock Café. An evocative name that makes Jim Morrison jump, who rushes inside. Henri Diltz immortalized the place and the group decided to include the name of the café on one of the sides of the album. The photo of the establishment is also on the back of the album. Today, unfortunately, this bar is closed and replaced by a grocery store.

This decision will, without knowing it, have incredible consequences. In the early 1970s, Peter Morton and Isaac Tigrett wanted to open their own diner in London. Fans of the Doors, they decide to contact the band to ask them for permission to call it Hard Rock Café. Not an invention on their part, the Doors accept and the rest is legend.

265

At the end of 2022, there are 265 Hard Rock Cafés worldwide, including 3 casinos and 38 hotels.
