Gotham Square
“I would say that for me the real turning point was Gotham Square. We knew we needed a special place to create the Gotham City version of Times Square. While googling, I came across Wellington Square in Liverpool and then I really started to get interested in this city. I then realized what an incredible resource of places it was.“James Chinlund recalled on the Radio Times website, shortly after the shooting. Yet, on screen, Wellington Square is barely recognizable. The column in the middle of the crossroads, however, is identifiable. A monument that the digital effects specialists have disguised in such a way as to make the square resemble an audacious mix between Piccadilly Circus in London and Times Square in New York.
The gigantic billboards seen in The Batman do not exist in reality. Wellington Square is much wiser than in the film and the buildings that we see around it are much less contemporary than those built by the special effects in the film. However, the foundations of Gotham City were found in Liverpool.
The Batman features three of the iconic people from the superhero universe, namely Catwoman, the Penguin and the Riddler.
Wellington Column
The heart of Liverpool, Wellington Square is located just a few meters from the shore in one of the busiest areas of the city.
The square is notable for Wellington’s Column, a Grade II listed monument, registered in the National Heritage List of England. A tribute to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, this building consists of a granite pedestal and a Darley Dale sandstone column with a total height of 33 meters. Steps lead up to an observation platform near the Duke’s statue. The column counts among its most illustrious neighbors St. George’s Hall, the Liverpool Central Library, the World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery.
