Gotham City Hall
The Batman begins with the murder of outgoing Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. (Rupert Penry-Jones). The man responsible, a criminal nicknamed the Riddler (Paul Dano), intends to stir up trouble in a city already plagued by crime and corruption. In Gotham City Hall, the new mayor tries to cope. James Chinlund, the lead designer of The Batman, begins his scouting on the internet. In agreement with director Matt Reeves, James Chinlund wants to give the new Gotham City a more European feel. Logically, he focuses his research on the old continent. As he roams the streets of Liverpool, he soon sets his sights on the St. George’s Hall.
“But we knew that Gotham had to look like an American city. We were all a little nervous about doing our research outside the United States. Liverpool has established itself as a treasure trove of incredible locations. For example, St. George’s Hall in Liverpool was used to create not only the Gotham City Hall but also the Gotham Bank “James Chinlund recalled in the columns of Radio Times.
Plunged into a dark and oppressive atmosphere, the St. George’s Hall and its glorious columns shine brightly on the screen, in the center of an environment that is of course largely shaped by digital technology. A central place in the story, where Batman (Robert Pattinson) returns regularly during his investigations. The symbol of a corrupt justice.
The Batman was originally intended to be directed and starred Ben Affleck. It was not until 2017 that Matt Reeves was attached to the project after the actor’s departure.
St George's Hall Liverpool
The St. George’s Hall, a neo-classical theater, was built in 1854 in downtown Liverpool.
Listed as a Grade I building, St. George’s Hall faces Lime Street Station. Designed by architect Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, it is an integral part of the Liverppol merchant port areas that UNESCO has designated as World Heritage. Immediately recognizable by its imposing columns, it also features numerous carved friezes on its façade. Its interior is also remarkable, with exceptional stained glass windows and ornamentation. Statues of William Roscoe, Edward Robert, George Stephenson, Joseph Mayer and Kitty Wilkinson are displayed in the Great Hall.
