Gotham City Cemetery
The final sequence of The Batman, in the Glasgow cemetery, is one of the first that the team of director Matt Reeves shoots upon arrival on the old continent. It is also one of the only ones produced before the pause related to the Covid-19 pandemic. A moving scene, during which Batman (Robert Pattinson) and Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) meet one last time before saying goodbye, while in Gotham City, new antagonists are organizing to take over the city.
The Glasgow Necropolis stands out among all the chosen locations. Away from the city center, in the quiet, the atmosphere is particular and thus comes to nourish the powerful melancholy characterizing the approach of the movie. A place where no modification was necessary, imbued with an atmosphere so particular that it is enough to promote the emergence of an emotion as strong as unexpected.
Colin Farrell had to endure 4 hours of makeup daily to become the Penguin.
Glasgow Necropolis
One of the finest Victorian cemeteries in the United Kingdom, Glasgow Necropolis is home to 50,000 graves.
The Glasgow Necropolis was established in 1832, following the opening of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Established to meet the needs of an ever-growing population, the cemetery houses more than 3,500 monuments, including the monument to John Knox, the grave of Mrs. Lockhart, the Houldworth mausoleum, the Celtic cross on Andrew McCall’s grave and the grave of Mrs. Margaret Montgomerie. The site also contains the graves of 19 Commonwealth military personnel.
