Gotham Central Court House
Just because we have a $100 million budget doesn’t mean we shouldn’t cut corners when we can. With this in mind, the producers of The Batman moved to Liverpool, grouping the filming of several key scenes in the historic center, Wellington Square and the surrounding area. A practical choice, avoiding too many round trips, but also guided by the imperative need to give authenticity to this new version of Gotham City.
The County Sessions House in Liverpool is the setting for Gotham City’s court house, the Gotham Central Court House. It is one of the so-called classic monuments of Gotham, where historical and traditional buildings stand next to more futuristic ones. A very audacious and convincing mix, at the center of a very assertive artistic approach. The setting of the new adventures of Batman, the vigilante created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, thus plays a predominant role in the film.
With 175 minutes on the clock, The Batman is the longest movie in the Batman saga.
County Sessions House
A Grade II listed building located next to the Walker Art Gallery on Merseyside, County Sessions House features neoclassical architecture.
It was in 1884 that the building was inaugurated, after two years of work. Designed by the Liverpool architects F&G Holme, the County Sessions House was formerly the courthouse. It was not until 1984, when the Crown Courts moved to Derby Square, that the site became home to the Merseyside Museum of Labor History. It now houses the offices and storage space of the Walker Art Gallery. The former lawyers’ and judges’ chambers and cells remain unchanged.
