Funeral of Queen Aemma and Prince Baelon
If David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had taken up residence in Paint Hall Studios, near the former Titanic shipyards, the producers of House of the Dragon have set up their headquarters in England, at Warner’s famous Leavesden Studios, using new technology designed to immerse actors in an entirely digital environment. However, as for Game of Thrones, many natural locations were also exploited during the shooting of the pilot episode. The entire team of director Miguel Sapochnik went to Hartland Quay, on the Atlantic coast of Devon, to stage the funeral of Queen Aemma and Prince Baelon.
Eager to limit travel, the producers nevertheless managed to find a site with landscapes reminiscent of Peyredragon, the home of the Targaryens, which the production of Game of Thrones had based on the coast of the Spanish Basque Country, including the beach of Itzurun in Zumaia. Taking place on the cliff, below a rock on which a magnificent dragon is enthroned, the funeral scene reunites a majority of the cast of the first episode as Paddy Considine and Rhys Ifans.
Of course, the city in the background required some work on the part of the CGI specialists. The latter also had the honour of creating the dragon. One of the many winged creatures at the heart of a tale of fire and blood.
The first airing of the first episode of House of the Dragon drew 9.986 million viewers in the United States. An absolute record for HBO.
Hartland Quay
Site of an ancient port, this site is one of the most spectacular on the Atlantic coast of Devon in England.
From the port erected at the time of Henry VIII, destroyed during a storm, only part of the wall of the old pier remains today, visible only at low tide. Characterized by its protruding rocks, the site has also been the scene of several shipwrecks. Praised by hikers, it now regularly hosts the filming of films and series such as Treasure Island, The War Zone, Solomon Kane, Rebecca and House of the Dragon.
