After many adventures, Asterix, Obelix and Jolitorax have found the magic potion barrel. The latter is bought by the team of Camulodunum to heal the players during their calabash match against Durovernum.
This is how the two Gauls discover a new English tradition with the sporting competition of the Five Tribes Tournament, an obvious parody of rugby and its Five Nations tournament.
Twickenham Stadium
This big sporting event takes place, according to Jolitorax, in a stadium near Londinium. Even if René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo do not mention the stadium, it is easy to guess that it is Twickenham Stadium. In addition to being located near London, the stadium is the headquarters of the English rugby union.
Is this a good situation, Asterix?
Like Asterix and Cleopatra, Asterix in Britain has had two adaptations in the cinema with an animated film of the same name released in 1986, and a live-action adaptation in 2012, Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia. The latter takes up the key events of the album by coupling it with the story of Asterix and the Normans. It is thus with logic that we find the match of calabash.
Of course, the sports match was not shot in a real stadium, but it was reproduced in the Mafilm studios in Budapest, Hungary.
The film is the last one where Gérard Depardieu plays Obelix. Asterix is played by Edouard Baer who is best known for his role as Otis in Mission Cleopatra. In particular, they refer to the character by parodying the character’s tirade: “It’s a good situation, this scribe?
Although the film was better received by the specialized critics than the previous opus Asterix at the Olympic Games, Astérix and Obélix: God Save Britannia has achieved far less admissions than the other live adaptations.
