Taylor Sheridan, the creator and showrunner of Yellowstone did not want to move his series abroad. In order to give it a maximum of authenticity, he wanted to stay as close as possible to the real places of the plot. Logically, regarding the Dutton Ranch, his research focused on Montana. The only way for him to create a tangible environment without the use of special effects such as digitally inlaying mountains in the background.
While production is in full swing, the team soon moves to the Chief Joseph Ranch, a historic Montana establishment located on a huge piece of land. This natural setting does not fail to impress Kevin Costner. An actor, however, accustomed to the great outdoors, he whose career has regularly returned to the Western and these once wild and so fascinating lands. “We actually filmed on the ranch where the action of the series is supposed to take place. It is almost the main character of the show. You step outside and see the horses running around the working men as the weather dictates.“He recalled in the columns of the site The Pioneer Woman. A ranch whose roof now displays the giant Y, symbol of the Dutton family.
While the heart of the production is indeed at the Chief Joseph Ranch, Taylor Sheridan has never shied away from wandering into neighboring states. In Utah, Yellowstone held the largest filming in the state’s history. This is a windfall for local companies, which are also involved for several months of the year.
Yellowstone is one of the few major American series to be shot 100% in the United States, mostly in Utah, Montana and Texas.
