Downtown
Located far from Los Angeles and Hollywood, in the Boston area, Rian Johnson’s team operates several locations including the beautiful Ames Mansion, where much of the action takes place. The chase between Marta (Ana de Armas), Ransom (Chris Evans) and Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) was captured in downtown Natick, a charming New England town known for its rich heritage.
A cinematic city
While it is known for being home to a military-industrial complex, the town of Natick is also regularly sought after by film and television producers. When Rian Johnson moved there with his team, the city had already been used as a setting for series such as Defending Jacob and the film Last Days of Summer, with Kate Winslett and Josh Brolin. The old houses and brick-fronted buildings provide a wonderful backdrop for the single chase in Knives Out, while matching the muted atmosphere of the mansion where Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) solves his intractable investigation.
In the shadow of Agatha Christie
Rian Johnson came up with the idea for Knives Outmany years before the project was completed. He spoke about his intentions to Entertainment Weekly: “I always wanted to do a detective story. I grew up reading Agatha Christie’s books. It’s a genre that I love deeply. The first idea was thus very conceptual. (…) So I was very excited about making a very narrative film (…). I deliberately tried to make the film not rely on the final surprise. I was hoping it would be entertaining, even if the surprise was stale.“
Knives Out marks the fourth collaboration between director Rian Johnson and his cousin, composer Nathan Johnson.
Natick
Located about twenty kilometers from Boston, Natick is known to house the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center.
The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center is a vast military-industrial complex of 320,000 m2. Many of the soldiers working there live in downtown Natick, a town of 37,000 inhabitants founded in 1651 by John Eliot, a British missionary. Once known for its farms but also for its shoe factories, the city has several centers of interest such as Casey’s Diner, one of the oldest ten-stool restaurants in the United States, the Natick Center for the Arts, the Natick Mall, the largest in all of New England, or Walnut Hill School. Several films and series such as Defending Jacob, Labor Day and Knives Out have been filmed there.
