“This gray stone building with its slate-capped tower, around which an avenue of chestnut trees, a small park, then, tight, bushy, damp, wedged between old walls, a wood in miniature, two hectares of oak trees, domain of spiders and snakes.”

Excerpt from Le Testament Donadieu by Georges Simenon

The rich and powerful shipowner Oscar Donadieu lives with his wife in his castle in La Rochelle. When he dies under strange circumstances, his family is unpleasantly surprised by the content of his will. Of course, many family gatherings take place in the residence.

From 1932 to 1936, Georges Simenon lived in a house in Marsilly, a 16th century manor house. It is this ship that he includes in his novel Le Testament Donadieu, serving as a backdrop to the adventures of the shipowner’s family. The description made by the novelist is strikingly realistic with the real places.

His wife, Tigy, loved to paint while the novelist roamed the moors and often went to La Rochelle to seek inspiration. The large wood allowed Georges Simenon to raise two wolves, a passion that was not to everyone’s taste in the neighborhood.

The writer fell in love with the place and wanted to buy the estate. But the owner at the time, Georges Micou, did not want to sell it. A decision that will push the novelist to return to Paris before changing his mind and returning to La Rochelle in 1938.
