The fictional town of Summerville, supposedly located in the state of Oklahoma, is actually a clever combination of several Canadian towns in the Alberta region. While the streets of Fort MacLeod were used extensively, as well as a few locations in Beiseker, director Jason Reitman exploited the desolate landscape of the former Turner Valley Gas Plant, also in Alberta.
With rusty pipes running for hundreds of feet and tall industrial buildings, this site lends itself beautifully to the scene during which Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Podcast (Logan Kim) try out Egon Spengler’s proton pack. The teams in charge of the decorations did not have to make any changes, except for a few adjustments to hide the panels and other details betraying the fact that today the place is a museum dedicated to the history of the region. A particularly important scene in the film is the fitting of the ghost hunter’s weapon in one of the buildings where the two children come face to face with the new version of the mythical All-Gobbler, the green specter adept at gargantuan meals. On screen, the labyrinthine corridors of this rusted-out factory provide a perfect setting, as disturbing as possible and thus powerfully cinematic. This is also where the new Ghostbusters manage to capture their first spirit! It’s only a short step to believing that the Turner Valley Gas Plant is actually home to some real ghosts.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife reunites five actors from the first film, namely Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver.
