Death Valley National Park
Entirely made at home in Ireland, The Joshua Tree was a road trip to Death Valley National Park in the American West for the cover art. The original concept for this one was “A place where two civilizations meet”, as explained by graphic designer Steve Averill. With this idea in mind, the group embarked with photographer Anton Corbijn in a minibus in mid-December 1986, to travel through isolated places in California.
When the group manages to locate the Joshua tree, some pictures are taken. Finally, the one of the tree is on the back of the album while a picture of the musicians at Zabriskie Point is on the front. When The Joshua Tree is released, it is a new triumph. Almost immediately, fans rush to the Mojave Desert to find the tree. In 2000, this one ends up dying of its own accord. It is estimated that he was nearly 200 years old. Not enough to discourage U2 fans, always numerous to go to Death Valley National Park. To the point of sometimes braving the weather.
360º World Tour of U2 in 2009 brought in $736 million. Only Ed Sheeran has done better between 2017 and 2019 with his Tour.
Death Valley National Park
Contrary to what its name may suggest, the cover of The Joshua Tree was not taken in the national park of the same name, but on the side of the Mojave Desert…
The title of the record refers to the Joshua tree, which is found in the desert region of the American West. While the cover shows the four members of the band, the back of the record reveals the desert, where an atypical specimen of the Joshua tree stands.
Located near the town of Darwin, this tree has become over the years a meeting place for fans. Unfortunately, the tree fell during the winter of 1999-2000. The legendary Anton Corbijn was responsible for the artwork of The Joshua Tree, and the designer Steve Averill was responsible for its design.
