Dam
Shooting in Alberta gave showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin the opportunity to highlight some of the more or less hidden historical monuments. Never before has the Horseshoe Falls Dam had such exposure. Especially since on screen, the latter has not been modified and appears largely as it really is.
From game to series
Adapting a game as cult as The Last of Us was not an easy task. Including for Neil Druckmann, one of the two showrunners, himself creator of the Playstation video game. His presence did not prevent some fans from criticizing. Neil Druckmann responded to this criticism in the columns of Variety: “I have learned to expect negative reactions just by sneezing. I think it’s a testament to the type of fans we have, who are so protective and love the world and these characters so much that anything they see as a deviation, without the full context and what it means, they assume the worst and push it away.“
Notable differences
Very faithful to its model, concerning the story but also the settings, the series also deviated from it. The cordyceps, the fungus that causes the infection at the center of the series and the game, has been changed, for example. The contaminating spores having been replaced by filaments. A choice justified by Neil Druckmann: “I believe in this addition. That’s actually one of the choices that encouraged me to think that it would have been cool to have him in the game.“
The video game The Last of Us was almost adapted to the cinema by Sam Raimi. The project was finally abandoned in favor of the TV series.
Horseshoe Falls Dam
This dam is part of Alberta’s first large-scale hydroelectric generating station. It was born at the beginning of the 20th century.
Built to cope with the massive influx of people into Alberta, this dam was born out of the collaboration of two Calgary businessmen, WM Alexander and WJ Budd, the founders of the Calgary Power and Transmission Company. Still in service today, the dam and the hydroelectric power station have been enlarged and have greatly contributed to the development of the region.
