Court fight
The Red Keep, the nerve center of royalty in King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros, is essentially a collage of several locations in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The team having chosen to film the famous court fight between Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) and Gregor Clegane (Hafpor Julius Bjornsson) on the terrace of the Belvedere Hotel, an establishment closed in 1985 recently bought by a Russian oligarch.
In these still abandoned places, the production has all the leisure to install decorations. The arena where the fight takes place is itself painted to fit the aesthetic specifications of the series. The view of the sea and the architecture of the monument nevertheless allow special effects specialists to limit the use of digital images.
Previously played by Conan Stevens and Ian Whyte, the character of Gregor Clegane changes his face again in 2013. Strength sports champion Hafpor Julius Bjornsson makes his acting debut in Game of Thrones starting in season 4. In this, he has the heavy task of interpreting the character when this one engages in a furious duel against Oberyn Martell. With his 2.05 m and 200 kg, the Icelandic athlete makes a very convincing Gregor Clegane and thus does full justice to his nickname, The Mountain. Very satisfied with his performance, the producers will entrust him the role until the end of the series.
The character of Gregor Clegane has been played by 3 actors over the 8 seasons of Game of Thrones: Conan Stevens, Ian Whyte and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.
Ulica Vlaha Bukovca
Abandoned since the Croatian War of Independence, this establishment has gained new fame thanks to the Game of Thrones series.
Having operated for only six years, until 1985, this hotel with more than 200 rooms subsequently housed Croatian refugees. Composed of eighteen floors, it stands out particularly thanks to its terrace on which the producers of Game of Thrones filmed the scene of the judicial duel. A place from which a magnificent panorama is revealed to visitors. The former Belvedere Hotel was bought by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg in 2014 for the sum of 12 million euros.
