Continuation with the Gallimimus
While the island of Kaua’i in Hawaii was extensively used by Steven Spielberg in the filming of Jurassic Park, the team also shot at the Kualoa Ranch, a farm on the island of Oahu. The meadow on which Industrial Light and Magic’s special effects specialists embed the Gallimimus offers a breathtaking view of Na Pali, the famous jagged cliffs that have made Hawaii popular around the world.
Jurassic Park is one of the first films shot at Kualoa Ranch. The box-office success subsequently encouraged many productions to set up shop in this natural sanctuary, attracted by the incredible scenery and the amenities offered by the owners. Nevertheless, the directors must also observe a series of rules when they move into the ranch. David Morgan, one of the managers, explained to the Rob on Location site: “The contracts always state that if they change any of our property in any significant way, then they have to pay to restora the land to its original condition. Sometimes, but not always, we get the contract to do that restoration. If that is the case and it is a cool looking set, then we will not demolish it until it starts to deteriorate significantly. That way our tour customers can get to see the set as it was built by the movie production and we can promote the movie to them. Win/win situation. There was one movie production that we knew would be a big hit, and we knew that it would be a cool set, so we negotiated a deal whereby they used more durable construction material and we did not charge them for the demolition of the set.“
Thus, today, Jurassic Park, but also Jurassic World, also shot on location, play a big role in Kualoa. The same is true of the Lost series, where many of the settings are still enjoyed by tourists from around the world.
Universal spent a record $65 million on the Jurassic Park marketing campaign.
Kualoa Ranch
A 1,600 hectare nature reserve, the Kualoa Ranch is one of the major tourist attractions on the island of O’ahu.
Located on an ancient sacred site, the Kualoa Ranch has its origins in 1850 when Gerritt P. Judd, an American doctor, acquired a plot of land. King Kamehameha III maintains a friendly relationship with this man thanks to which he can have access to medical journals. Over the years, the ranch grew and devoted itself in particular to the cultivation of sugar cane. Occupied by the American army during the Second World War, it is now open to filming and to the public. Jurassic Park, Godzilla and even the series Lost were filmed there.
