Clergy Daughters' School
Clergy Daughters’ School, a poorly maintained school
Jane Eyre becomes intimately involved with the Brontës. Like Emily with Wuthering Heights Charlotte draws on her family history to imagine the plot of her novel. The heroine is ten years old when she is sent to a boarding school for girls. After the death of her parents, the orphan is taken in by her aunt. But in a fit of anger over an illegitimate punishment, she faints.
She was placed at the Lowood Institution of the Clergy Daughters’ School where she met Helen Burns. Her friend died of tuberculosis due to the unsanitary conditions of the institution. A tragedy similar to that experienced by Maria and Elizabeth, the two older Brontë sisters, who died of the same disease while students at Cowan Bridge School.
Maria Brontë died at the age of 11 of tuberculosis contracted in Cowan Bridge Residential School. His sister Elizabeth was 10 years old.
