Citizens Bank Park

Saga Shazam !
Movie Shazam ! Fury of Gods David F. Sandberg (2023)
Kalypso (Lucy Liu), one of Atlas' daughters, manages to get hold of her father's apple and plants his tree in the middle of Citizens Bank Park, giving birth to many monsters. It is also inside the stadium that she delivers, on the back of her dragon, her final fight against Shazam (Zachary Levi).

The champions of this kingdom will be no match for us.”

(Helen Mirren)

If Citizens Bank Park is a big part of the lives of Philadelphians, it is no different in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The stadium is the scene of the final battle of the film. Of course, director David F. Sandberg didn’t actually shoot the final confrontation between Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Shazam (Zachary Levi) in Citizens Bank Park. Even if the filmmaker has done multiple shots in order to digitally integrate the fight in post-production.

Decisive match

Mostly shot on location in Atlanta, Shazam! Fury of the Gods also required filming on the streets of Philadelphia, where the plot takes place. Some of the city’s monuments are clearly visible on screen, even though the scenes taking place in the streets were all produced from meticulous reconstructions in order to benefit from lower shooting costs. Citizens Bank Park has multiple opportunities to shine on screen, when Lucy Liu’s character decides to land her dragon there but also at the end, when Shazam definitively proves his worth.

A hero who has become (almost) an adult

Zachary Levi, still in the skin of the superhero, spoke to Screerant about the evolution of the latter: “At first, Billy Batson was 14-15 years old. Now he has 17. That’s a three-year gap, and for young people, three years is a pretty big gap. So I tried to take advantage of that. (…) Has he matured? I tried to focus on the way 17-year-olds talk. What words do they use? What is their slang? Things like that. So I just tried to incorporate as many things into the character to build a performance that made sense.
