Church Cottage

Saga Harry Potter
Novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone J. K. Rowling (1998)
In a child's heart, the first homes are the most important. It is in our memories that we build ourselves, that we dream and on which we structure our life. Joanne Rowling is no exception to the rule, as her years at Church Cottage have been magical in many ways.

“What they’re saying, is that last night Voldemort turned up in Godric’s Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The rumour is that Lily and James Potter are – are – that they’re – dead.”

Albus Dumbledore

1974. The Rowling family bought a charming house called Church Cottage in the village of Tutshill, England. The young Joanne is amazed by the vaulted ceilings, the stone windows and the gothic spirit of the place.

When she decided to start writing her novel during a train trip in 1990, she was inspired by the places she knew. Thus Church Cottage lends many of its features. First, the Potters’ residence at Godric’s Hollow is a copy of this house. Then, the little closet under the stairs, where the one at 4 Privet Drive, the home of the wizard’s aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, inspires him. Of course, the gothic architecture is an excellent inspiration for Hogwarts and a trap door leading to the cellar is a starting point for a crazy adventure in search of the Philosopher’s Stone.

In 1995, when Harry Potter was just a little boy unknown to the general public, the Rowlings left Church Cottage. Two years later, the young wizard was discovered by the world, giving J. K. Rowling rock star status.

When the house was put up for sale in 2011, a mysterious organization called the Volant Charitable Trust bought it. An organization run by none other than J. K. Rowling. The author was able to return to her childhood home and rediscover the graffiti she had done on her windowsill as a reminder of her time in the 1980s. An effective spell.

500

In 1997, the first volume is drawn at 500 copies. In 2018, the milestone of 500 million copies sold worldwide was passed.

Church Cottage

Built in 1852, the beautiful Victorian Gothic house is located in the village of Tutshill in Gloucestershire.

Originally used as a school and then as a rectory, the building is of unknown origin. Many believe that the architect Henry Woodyer was the designer. He also designed the adjoining St. Luke’s Church. In 1988, the residence was given a Grade II listing by English Heritage for its special architectural or historic interest, citing its exterior appearance as “intact from its original design”.
