Christ Church College
Lewis Carroll’s novel begins under a tree in the garden of Christ Church. With her big sister, Alice is sitting on the lawn but she is bored. She looks at the older girl’s book but finds no interest in it because it has no pictures. She is suddenly awakened from her torpor by the vision of a white rabbit that she decides to follow. It is the beginning of a great adventure where the young girl discovers a world not so fairy as that. To write this initiatory tale mixed with a philosophy of life, the British novelist is inspired by places he knows. Thus, he stages the Deanery Garden of Christ Church, the garden of the dean of the institution, his friend Henry Liddell, the father of the real Alice. Although it is still private, this green area contains elements of the flora from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
A deacon, photographer, and professor of mathematics at this university, the author tells the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for the first time in a boat on the Cherwell River, along this very garden, to Henry and his daughters. On July 4, 1862, Charles Dodgson, his real name, tried to woo Alice, then 10 years old, with riddles and other stories. If both books are best-sellers in children’s literature, the novelist’s unhealthy envy of the little girl would be punishable by prison today. Two years later, the writer offered the first calligraphic and illustrated version to the teenager.
While Macmillan & Co. published 2,000 copies of the original edition, only 22 copies remain today.
Christ Church
Founded in 1546, Christ Church is one of the largest and richest colleges in Oxford University.
In the center of the British city, this vast architectural complex of five buildings houses Oxford Cathedral dating from the 12th century. The university has an important collection of photographs and paintings. Lewis Carroll taught here and used it as inspiration for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the first two Harry Potter films, the monumental staircase was used as a set and the Great Hall inspired the production of the saga. Today, 600 students attend classes in these facilities with rooms to stay in. On the other side of the meadow flows the Cherwell River, ideal for rowing.
