McFly Farm
Determined to return to 1885 to save Doc (Christopher Lloyd), Marty (Michael J. Fox) comes face to face with his ancestor Seamus McFly who welcomes him to his farm.
Robert Zemeckis decided to place his farm at China Flat, a mountain plateau near Oak Park, California. One of the park’s hiking trails, the China Flat Trail Loop, offers a view of Simi Peak Mountain, visible in Seamus McFly’s shots at his farm.
The location was also used for other key scenes in the film set in 1955:
- Doc (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty (Michael J. Fox) go to a disused mine where the 1985 Doc stored the DeLorean in 1885 to allow Marty to return to his time from 1955.
- After finding the machine, Marty notices a particular grave, that of his friend who died very shortly after writing the letter telling him where to find the car.
The China Flat offers three Fanspot in one place, offering mountain bikers and hikers a real trip back in time.
Michael J. Fox was injured twice during the film. The first during the hanging scene where he was actually suffocated for a few seconds, the second when he was shot by Bufford Tannen’s horse. The actor wanted to make the stunt himself and broke a rib.
China Flat
For a nice walk in the footsteps of your favorite heroes, choose China Flat.
China Flat is located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It’s a little-known plateau above 2,000 feet in the Simi Hills; a veritable garden that experienced hikers know well because it’s an intermediate point in their climb up Simi Peak.
Local historians recount that Chinese people camped there discreetly due to the remoteness and difficulty of accessing the area, in order to (clandestinely) land immigrants in Santa Monica Bay and hide them during the Chinese exclusion period.
Regardless of the Chinese involvement, China Flat is a prairie place crisscrossed with hiking trails such as the China Flat Trail Loop, a 6 kilometer long loop popular with mountain bikers and hikers.
