Although the majority of the action of Morbius takes place in New York, no scenes were actually shot there. Digital special effects and clever camera movements created a perfect illusion. Like when Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) and his best friend Milo (Matt Smith) meet in Central Park.
Jonah Coombes, in charge of the location scouting, chose Crystal Palace Park, a rather unknown green space in the suburbs of London. The shoot, largely located in Manchester, called for locations close by in order to limit travel. That’s how Jared Leto and Matt Smith found themselves on the lawn of the former Crystal Palace Park, a building that is now gone.
“The railings, steps and statues in Crystal Palace Park echo the architecture of Central Park,” Jonah Coombes told inews.co.uk. “Crystal Palace Park was located on a hill, so we could superimpose the New York skyline in the background with digital effects.“Nevertheless, the technical team also built some sets like this fully functional replica of a well-known New York fountain. Note that Daniel Espinosa also exploited some shots of Black Park, in the south of Buckinghamshire. A location chosen again for practical reasons in relation to its proximity to Pinewood Studios.
Morbius earned more than $90 million at the box office in its first few days in theaters.
Crystal Palace Park
A Victorian park in South London, Crystal Palace Park is located on the site of a former exhibition hall once located in the heart of Hyde Park.
Opened in 1854, this 81-hectare green space contains several dinosaur sculptures as well as a bust of Sir Joseph Paxton and a statue of Guy the Gorilla by David Wynne. Over the years, the park has also been used for various sporting events. Many cricket and soccer matches have been played there. Today, it is a popular place for walkers.
