Melisandre (Carice van Houten)

Like many natural sites used in the Game of Thrones series, the Cushendun Caves have been “dressed up” to perfectly fit the specifications of the series. This is how Davos Mervault (Liam Cunningham) and Melisandre (Carice van Houten) reach the caves by boat. In fact, the site is quite accessible on foot. Nevertheless, with the exception of the scary creature to which Melisandre gives birth, the caves did not require the addition of digital effects to shine on the screen.

The filming of this decisive scene, during which Melisandre reveals part of her powerful powers to a stunned Davos Mervault, saw the team set up deep in the Cushendun cave, near the village of the same name. Filmed at night, the sequence then encouraged the Northern Ireland government to place a sign at the entrance of the site to inform tourists, as is the case at all filming locations of the series in the country.
