Movie Beaumarchais the Scoundrel Édouard Molinaro (1996)
Narrating the adventures of Beaumarchais (Fabrice Luchini) in the France of Louis XV, just before the Revolution, Édouard Molinaro's film had the distinct honor of receiving permission to shoot in the courtyard of the Palace of Versailles. For the interiors, however, it was a different story.

Beaumarchais will never be quite Molière, because his life amuses him much more than his work.

Beaumarchais (Fabrice Luchini)

The settings of Beaumarchais the Scoundrel consist of a skilful assembly of places located in the Ile-de-France and in the provinces. Some of them play a leading role without being directly named. This is the case of the castle of Plassac in Charente-Maritime, where the actors took place to wrap some of the most important sequences of the film.

Offering more than advantageous shooting conditions relative to the lesser celebrity of the place compared to Versailles or the Château de Fontainebleau, Plassac is therefore more accessible. Its interiors, but also its park and gardens offering multiple perspectives. An ideal place to return to the time of Beaumarchais, this statesman but also famous writer, to whom we owe notably The Barber of Seville.

The film received three nominations at the 1997 César Awards: Best Actor for Fabrice Luchini, Best Costume Design and Best Set Design. However, he did not win any awards.

Castle Plassac

Built in the 18th century, the castle Plassac is located in the commune of the same name in Charente-Maritime.

Located on the site of an ancient fortress, the building has been expanded several times over the years to meet the requirements of its successive owners. Known to have housed Rommel’s staff in 1940, at the beginning of the Second World War, it consists of a high pavilion with broken roofs framed by two wings each ending in a triangular pediment. Its courtyard is surrounded by 18th century stables. Its park, also remarkable, is bordered by walls with four round towers and three large doors. This part is also classified as a historical monument.
