The Château de la Roche-Courbon owes a debt of gratitude to the famous author Pierre Loti from Rochefort. His writings helped save the Saintongeaise house.

“Perhaps at my call some elite buyer will emerge, worthy of being an inhabitant of the enchanted castle and capable of respecting the life of the great secular oaks all around. But let him hasten, for the threat is pressing!…”

Excerpt from Le Château de la Belle-au-bois-Dormant by Pierre Loti

October 21, 1908. Pierre Loti makes an appeal in the Figaro to save the castle of La Roche-Courbon. A whim of a famous author? Not at all. From his birth to his twelfth birthday, the sailor-writer spent his vacations close to this old XVth century house, surrounded by its luxuriant forest. The castle is sublime but it is abandoned, its owner hardly ever coming, leaving it in the hands of his steward who cannot act alone.

Life goes on and Pierre Loti embarks for the seven seas, lives partly from his pen, takes part in many adventures, but does not forget the castle of La Roche-Courbon. He devoted many lines to her in his Roman d’un enfant and dedicated to her the book Le Château de la Belle-au-bois-Dormant, an appeal for help to save the castle. His estate is no longer maintained and his trees are threatened with saw cuts. So the author takes up his pen again and launches his S.O.S.

In a text full of emotions, the writer tells of his childhood walking his moor, of the majesty of the place and solemnly asks that a good soul save this land. It was not until 1920 that a certain Paul Chénereau picked up this bottle thrown into the sea, bought the castle, began its restoration and saved the place so cherished by Pierre Loti, thus seeing his wish fulfilled, three years before leaving for a last trip. An event to mark with a white stone.

1999

If the place was saved in 1920, the 1999 storm unfortunately decimated the forest described by Pierre Loti. It was partially restored by the public authorities and AMICOUR (the Association of Friends of La Roche Courbon).

Castle of la Roche Courbon

Built in the 15th century, the castle of La Roche Courbon has been damaged by time and has benefited from numerous restorations.

Long before Versailles, the castle of La Roche Courbon was adorned with French gardens just as sumptuous. The former 15th century stronghold has given way to a superb 17th century residence with large windows.

The Revolution did its first damage to the place, which began a long sleep in 1817 when the estate was sold by the daughter of the Franco-Irish naval officer Jean-Baptiste Mac Nemara.

Thanks to Pierre Loti, the place found a new owner in 1920 who completely restored the place, bringing back the gardens and giving back to the castle its former beauty.

Classified as a historical monument in 1925 and 1946, the castle now welcomes visitors, wedding receptions and numerous shows.
