Majestic and relatively well-preserved, sitting on its rocky promontory, Almodovar Castle is perfect to represent Tyrell House in Highgarden. The Tyrells are a wealthy family of the Seven Kingdoms and are renowned for their refinement. Almodovar Castle first appeared in the third episode of the seventh season, when Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) stormed the Tyrell headquarters. The balcony on which Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) appears is located in the dungeon of the same building. Only the landscape in the background has been digitally modified.
Later, Alomodovar del Rio was also widely used. Thus, the entrance, Olenna Tyrell’s living room and various parts welcomed the film crews. Mainly invested to create Highgarden, the castle was also used for a takeover as part of the invasion of Casterly Rock, the Lannister family’s castle. In other words, in the space of only a few episodes, the castle of Almodovar del Rio has “played” on screen not one but two castles!

Castillo Almodovar del Rio
A fortress built in 760, the castle of Almodovar del Rio is located in Andalusia, a few kilometers from Cordoba.
The castle takes place on an old fortified city formerly devoted to the exchange of raw materials. Remarkable thanks to its Mudejar architecture, it was incorporated into the court of Ferdinand III of Castile in 1240 and had several occupants over the years. It was classified as a property of cultural interest on June 25, 185 and today stands out as one of the most visited historical monuments in the region.
