“The Marquis de Carabas did what his cat advised, without knowing what good it would do.”

Excerpt from Puss in Boots by Charles Perrault

In 1697, Charles Perrault published, among other things, Puss in Boots , a whimsical tale in which a cat with the ability to speak turns his master, the son of a penniless miller, into an aristocrat with an immense fortune, the Marquis de Carabas.

The plan is cunning. Thanks to his long elaboration and his multiple stratagems, the feline manages to raise his master to the rank of marquis, who even obtains the hand of the king’s daughter.

For his character, Charles Perrault was inspired by a count, the Count of Caravaz alias Jules Gouffier. A similar Italian-sounding spelling for this gentleman, recently owner of the castle of Crazannes thanks to the family of his wife, the sister of Louis Acarie de la Rousselière.

Upon meeting the Count at court, the famous man of letters was fascinated by the character who was often described as very rich and colorful. If history does not say more about the details of this meeting, which even some historians doubt, the legend is tenacious. So much so that many enthusiasts meet regularly at the castle of Crazannes, also known as the “Castle of Puss in Boots”. This would also make the incredible building the former home of the ogre fooled by the cat. “Cat-chy!”

Forgotten around 1705, Perrault’s tales were revived 157 years later, in 1862, with the publication of a book illustrated by Gustave Doré and intended for children.

Château de Crazannes

Built on the ruins of an ancient fortress of the 11th century, the castle of Crazannes was built in the 14th century, making it one of the oldest castles in Charente-Maritime.

In the XIVth century, the infamous Black Prince would have found some moments of rest at the castle of Crazannes during his bloody campaign. In 1519, it was François I’s turn to stay there for a night.

Like the famous former king of France, visitors can also stay at the castle for one or more nights. 95 rooms welcome the curious, tourists or simple travelers in the building nicknamed “the Castle of Puss in Boots”.
