Castle of Crapaudine

Comics Le jardin des fées Audrey Alwett and Nora Moretti (2022)
Lucie is not very enthusiastic about spending some time with her uncle Edgar in his castle in Crapaudine. A building that looks strangely like the one in La Mothe-Chandeniers, a monument saved by a participatory funding.

“We have arrived! Welcome to Crapaudine Castle, Lucie.”

Lucie is placed with her uncle by her mother in the castle of Crapaudine in Normandy. The young teenager could no longer be raised by her nanny. She arrives in hostile territory because the old man sees her in a bad light. Especially that he does not carry Lucie’s mother in his heart.

Loving to draw, the young girl is also attracted by a non-existent garden. Would she be that tired? Better yet, this floral park is home to fairies. A great playground for Lucie.

Audrey Awlett, the scriptwriter, decided to set her plot in Normandy. However, there is no Crapaudine castle in the land of apples. The author simply used the castle of La Mothe-Chandeniers as a model for Lucie’s uncle’s house. This building probably hypnotized the writer. Located in the commune of Trois-Moutiers in the north of the Vienne department, its construction began in the 13th century. After a number of ups and downs, it was refurbished five centuries later in a neo-Gothic style. But a fire deteriorated it enormously, to the point of being abandoned. Parts of the roofs are left to smoke, rain is allowed to pass through and the vegetation takes over. The castle is rediscovered by amateur videos with drones flying over the ruins. In 2017, a subscription through a participatory financing is launched. On December 25th of the same year, the crowdfunding reached 1 617 000 euros. The duration of the restoration is estimated at seven years. However, the public can already visit a part of the building.

In the first part of the Jardin des fées, the castle is well standing with some trees piercing some walls. A greenhouse is added by Nora Moretti. This monument also brings its share of mystery thanks to the line of the author of Princess Sarah, a series already imagined by Audrey Alwett. In fact, the young writer had the idea for this set even before the participatory financing.

Château de La Mothe Chandeniers

Le château de la Mothe-Chandeniers is located in the commune of Les Trois-Moutiers in the Vienne department.

The history of the castle of La Mothe-Chandeniers is almost romantic.

Built in the 13th century by the de Bauçay family, the English seized it during the Hundred Years War. It passed into the Rochechouart family in the 15th century, and François was exiled there during the Fronde.

It was bought by a rich Parisian entrepreneur in 1809. He transformed the medieval structure into a neo-Gothic style. In 1932, a violent fire caused the furniture and parts of the roof to go up in smoke.

In the 1980s, a maths teacher tried to save it but nature took over.

It was not until 2017 that a subscription with participatory financing saved the castle. On 25 December 18,558 people donated a total of 1,617,000 euros. Even though it is being restored, it is still possible to visit it.
