Career
After abandoning their original idea of shooting on Long Island, the Duffer brothers, the showrunners of Stranger Things, decided to settle in Atlanta. Offering favorable economic conditions, the city is also full of very interesting places to give birth to the fictional city of Hawkins, in which the plot of the show is set. If several sequences are produced in the studio, in fabricated sets, others exist in reality, such as the quarry in which the body of the fake Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is found.
Bellwood Quarry already had a good reputation with Hollywood studios when Matt and Ross Duffer moved there with their actors. Seen in The Walking Dead or Hunger Games, the place is perfect to film one of the most disturbing sequences of season 1.
Finding the perfect cast was no small task for the Duffer brothers. The production auditioned 906 boys and 307 girls to find their happiness. Only Gaten Matarazzo, the interpreter of Dustin was selected immediately thanks to his audition tape. As for Millie Bobby Brown, the famous Eleven, she almost gave up before starting the shooting.
Noah Schnapp had only been in one film before he starred in Stranger Things. He is indeed in the credits of Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies .
Bellwood Quarry
After its closure, the Bellwood Quarry was bought in 2006 by the city of Atlanta and is to be redeveloped to become one of the largest parks in the metropolitan area.
The authorities of the city of Atlanta let the water from the surrounding groundwater invade this former quarry in order to transform it into a lake. Due to the works, it is currently not possible to visit it. It is now located within the Westwide Reservoir Park northwest of the inner city and north of Frederick Douglass High School.
